Every week, more and more everyday electronics make their way into the waste stream—and many of them contain lithium-ion batteries. Found in items like kids’ toys, smartphones, power tools, vapes or e-cigarettes and more, these small but powerful batteries can pose big risks if they’re not disposed of safely.

Remember: batteries never go in your Recology bins!

How can I spot lithium-ion batteries?

Lithium-ion batteries are often found in rechargeable everyday electronics. If you’re unsure, look for labeling on your device or battery that says “lithium” or “Li-ion.”

What’s the risk?

Lithium-ion batteries are one of the leading causes of fires in the waste industry. Damaged or crushed batteries can spark fires that are difficult to control and dangerous for our drivers, employees, and communities.

What can I do?

It’s easy being battery safe! There are simple steps we can all take to help reduce fire risks:

    • Remove batteries from devices when possible
    • Tape over battery terminals with clear tape
    • Store batteries in a cool, dry place until you can dispose of them safely
    • Never place batteries in your Recology bins.

If you’re not sure if a battery is a lithium-ion battery, it’s best to play it safe and adhere to these guidelines. By staying informed and following a few simple steps, we can all play a part in preventing fires. Thank you for helping keep our community safe!
