Legislation

We work closely with city and state government to ensure that our shared sustainability goals are made possible. The most impactful pieces of recycling legislation are AB 341 and more recently, AB 1826.

AB 341 – Mandatory Commercial Recycling

California Assembly Bill 341 (AB 341) mandates all businesses that generate more than 4 cubic yards of solid waste per week, and multifamily dwellings of 5 units or more to subscribe for recycling collection services. AB 341 is designed to reduce GHG emissions in the state by 5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).

In San Bruno, businesses and property owners are required to subscribe to services to comply. Property owners of a commercial business or multifamily residential dwelling may also require tenants to source separate their recyclable materials to aid in compliance.

AB 1826 – Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling

In October 2014, California passed Assembly Bill 1826 (AB 1826), mandates all businesses and commercial establishments, including multi-family units and schools, to arrange for organics hauling. Businesses that generating 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste (recycling, garbage and organics combined) per week must subscribe for organics collection services. Organics include food scraps, food soiled paper and yard trimmings. The goal of this legislation is avoid sending organic materials to landfill, therefore finding the best and highest use for these resources.
