There are several items that we can’t accept in our recycling program, but we don’t want to see them end up in the landfill either. Many of these items can be taken to special recycling locations, or reused by local businesses.

Ink Jet and Laser Printer Cartridges
Office Depot, Staples, and Office Max take back used cartridges and offer rewards points for recycling. You can also drop them off at Green Citizen. |

CDs and DVDs
Did you know CDs and DVDs are recyclable? Discs are shredded and recycled into a number of new products, often as automotive or construction materials. Even motorcycle helmets! You can mail or drop off your unwanted CDs and DVDs at GreenCitizen’s Peninsula Drop-Off Center, located in Burlingame. You don’t have to separate the CD/DVD from the jewel case, they can be recycled together at a price of $1.00/lb. If you mail in the CD’s/DVDs please be sure to weigh them and enclose a check for the appropriate amount due. Packaging Materials

Plastic Bags
In a landfill, plastic bags take up to 1,000 years to degrade. As litter, they breakdown into tiny bits, contaminating our soil and water. Luckily, several grocery stores on the Peninsula recycle plastic bags, including Safeway, Whole Foods, Nob Hill Foods, and Mollie Stones. |

Nursery Pots and Buckets
Nursery pots and buckets can be donated for re-use. Many local nurseries will take back black rigid plastic pots and return them to growers for reuse. A list of nurseries that take back pots can be found on www.recyclestuff.org. |
