Compost, Recycling, and Trash - Recology Mountain View

State and local laws require all Mountain View residents and businesses to separate organic material and recyclables from trash.

COMPOST
Food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard trimming must be separated from trash and placed in the compost. Effective January 2022, all single-family, multi-family, and commercial properties are required to collect compostable items separately. As of July 2017, all curbside yard trimmings carts are being serviced as compost carts.

RECYCLING
Mountain View residents have “dual stream” recycling – paper and containers are collected separately. This keeps materials clean and increases recyclability.

Mountain View businesses typically utilize mixed recycling.

Recyclables must be clean and dry. Accepted materials include paper, cardboard, metal cans, aluminum, glass bottles, and plastic containers such as bottles, tubs, and jugs.

TRASH
What is trash? Not much! Styrofoam, flimsy plastics (bags and saran wrap), latex gloves, pet waste, diapers, ceramics, and broken glassware, to name a few.

NOT ACCEPTED: bulky items, hazardous, and universal waste.

Hazardous Waste

Hazardous & universal waste are not accepted in any Recology-serviced container.
These items include batteries, electronics, fluorescent lightbulbs, paint, oil, cleaning solutions, pesticides, gas cylinders, medications, and sharps.

Mountain View Recycling Center: Extra recyclables and some difficult-to-dispose items accepted. Check accepted items and operating hours.
Recology South Bay Transfer Station: extra trash, extra yard trimmings, construction/ demolition material, metal, sheetrock, wood, carpet, carpet padding, furniture, mattresses, box springs, appliances, tires, monitors/ TVs, stall cleanup accepted. Credit or debit only. 1675 Rogers Ave, San Jose. Monday – Friday, 6 AM – 5 PM. Saturday, 6 AM – 2PM.
