Electronic and universal waste (e-waste) contain materials that can be harmful to the environment and public health if improperly disposed of. Items like old electronics, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and other common household products contain hazardous substances that can contaminate soil, water, and air. It is important to recycle these items properly to protect the environment.
ELECTRONIC AND UNIVERSAL WASTE EXAMPLES
- Electronics – Televisions, computers, monitors, laptops, cell phones, tablets, and printers
- Batteries – Rechargeable batteries, car batteries, and other household batteries (lithium, lead acid, nickel-cadmium, etc.)
- Fluorescent Bulbs and Tubes – Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and other types of fluorescent light bulbs
- Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) – Found in older televisions and computer monitors
- Small Appliances – Items such as toasters, microwaves, vacuums, and hair dryers
- Chargers and Cables – Old charging cables, adapters, and power cords
- Smoke Detectors – Household smoke detectors that contain small amounts of radioactive material
- Universal Waste – Includes pesticides, mercury-containing items, thermostats, and thermometers
LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES
Additional caution should be taken while disposing of lithium-ion batteries, which can light fires in collection trucks, transfer stations, and landfills. Like electronic and universal waste, batteries should not be placed in any of your Recology carts. Instead, they should be taped over their contact points and taken in.
Lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them can be disposed of free of charge at the front desk of Recology Butte Colusa Transfer Station.
