I was raised in a traditional Eritrean household by my mother and grandmother. I am a hybrid of ancient tradition and contemporary culture. The women that came before me have clearly influenced the ethical framework of my practice. I work in two directions — repurposing items currently in the product stream so that they have a second life, and creating new items that are biodegradable or employ the idea of regenerative design. I want to use my art practice as a vehicle to bring social and environmental change, whether it means archiving stories of cross generational identity or nurturing materials that have been marginalized by our throwaway culture.
