Transforming Northern California food scraps and yard trimmings into nutrient-rich compost.
Recology Ostrom Organics (ROO) is Recology’s newest compost facility and a key facility for the long-term management of organic material in Yuba and Sutter counties and the broader Northern California region. Since opening in November 2020, ROO has processed over 136,000 tons of organic material and produced over 80,000 cubic yards of organic compost.
Award Winning
Recology Ostrom Organics has been recognized by the National Waste and Recycling Association for our commitment to sustainability and innovation in the waste industry with the 2023 Organics Management Facility of the Year Award for our commitment to sustainability and innovation in the waste management industry.
Features
Aerated Static Pile (ASP) Technology
This site uses Aerated Static Pile (ASP) composting technology to create mature, high-quality organic compost in only 60 days.
With an ASP System, organic material sits on perforated pipes, which pull or push air through to better control moisture, oxygen, and microbial levels. Collected air is processed through a bio-filter, which absorbs odors and volatile organic compounds.
ROO has been designed to be fully permitted up to 2,000 tons per day with all air, water, and land requirements, including the California Composting General Order promulgated by the California State Water Board.
Site Sustainability
Recology Ostrom Organics shares a location with our Ostrom Road Landfill, which provides solid waste disposal services to both municipal and commercial customers. ROO uses the landfill gas from Ostrom Road to power all electrical equipment and lighting onsite.
Liquid run-off (contact water) is captured in a lined pond and used during the composting process to support the decomposition process.
All mobile equipment utilizes renewable diesel whenever possible.
