Examples of electronic waste include:

  • Microwaves
  • TV’s
  • Computer monitors and towers
  • Cell phones, iPods, DVD players, stereos, etc.

Examples of Universal Waste Include:

  • Used motor oil and filters
  • Batteries
  • Fluorescent tubes and bulbs
  • Sharps

Electronic and universal waste, such as computer monitors, TVs, fluorescent tubes and consumer batteries, are prohibited from the trash. Electronic and universal waste contains a variety of toxic components like lead, cadmium and mercury, arsenic and flame retardants, and when dumped in a landfill, these materials can contaminate the soil and ground water, thus impacting surrounding areas.

To find an approved electronic or universal waste drop off location, please visit HHW.org or call 408-299-7300. You may also schedule an appointment with the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Program – an appointment only service for all residents of Santa Clara County.
