Through performance, sculpture, and video my objects and narratives reference historic and speculative visual technologies, science, and science fiction. With materials and aesthetics from industrial design, I posit visual technologies that are unnecessarily mechanically complex, yet technologically simple. My narrative videos and performances feature a cast of fantastical characters—including an astronaut, scuba diver, narwhal, unicorn, living vases, and an Asianaut. I use these characters to explore fantasy, embodiment, displacement, and otherworldliness. In response to the large and historic collection of celadon ceramics in art museums, I have magnified the alienness of the Asian American diaspora to imagine that we come from Planet Celadon. Through humor and absurdity my affirming narratives fuse references to art history and popular culture to cross time and place.
