Recology King County Artist in Residence Program 2020 Now Accepting Applications

The Artist in Residence Program at Recology King County is a unique opportunity for King County artists to work with recycled materials and promote new ways of thinking about art and the environment. The five-month residency includes access to discarded materials at the Recology Material Recovery Facility in South Seattle, Recology Stores and the North Transfer Station.

Artists receive a monthly stipend and access to studio space. During the residency, artists speak to school classes and adult tour groups about the experience of working with recycled materials. At the conclusion of the residency, Recology King County hosts a public exhibition and reception for the artists, featuring work made during the residency. Artists contribute artwork to the program’s permanent collection and these pieces continue to be shown in off-site exhibitions.

Modeled after the Artist in Residence Program at Recology San Francisco, the Recology King County program aims to encourage us to see discarded materials in a new light and reflect on our own consumption practices. The 2020 program runs from April 1 – August 31, with a final exhibition in September. Applications are now being accepted through January 17, 2020. Artists will be interviewed and selected in February. Artists are strongly encouraged to tour the Recology recycling facility during the application process.

This year’s selection committee will be AIR program director Maria Phillips, 2019 artists in residence, Susan Robb and Hernan Paganini, and a member of the Seattle art community, TBD.
