New Service Information for Atherton Customers

To our Valued Customers in the Town of Atherton: 

On September 16, 2020Atherton’s Council Members voted in favor of exiting the South Bayside Waste Management Authority (SBWMA) Joint Powers Authority (JPA) and finalizing contract negotiations with Green Waste Recovery for solid waste, recycling and compost services.  Details about the Town’s decision to exit the JPA can be found on the town’s website here.

The Recology San Mateo County (Recology) contract with the Town of Atherton will expire on December 31, 2020.  Recology is working closely with the Town of Atherton and Green Waste Recovery to ensure a smooth transition.  Please see the cart replacement schedule below for more information on this transition.

Recology employee owners are proud to have served the Town of Atherton for 10 years. We appreciate the relationships we’ve built with our customers, and the opportunity to have support this wonderful community.

Although Recology will no longer be the service provider for the Town of Atherton, we will continue to provide our innovative and comprehensive collection services to the other Member Agencies of the SBWMA, which include the following jurisdictions: Belmont, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, parts of Unincorporated San Mateo County and West Bay Sanitary District.  

Cart Replacement Schedule

On January 2, 2021, GreenWaste Recovery will begin providing collection services, including Holiday Tree Collection, utilizing existing Recology carts.  Then, starting on January 18, 2021, Recology carts will be replaced with new GreenWaste carts.

We ask that customers please set out ALL Recology carts on their regular collection day, beginning on January 18, 2021.   After the carts have been serviced by GreenWaste, a separate vehicle will remove the Recology carts, and replace them with the same type, size and quantity of GreenWaste carts.  Therefore, it’s important to leave Recology carts at the curb after service, so they can be properly exchanged for new carts. Please also place any unused or empty Recology carts out on your regular service day, so they can also be exchanged for new GreenWaste Carts.

Please note that all carts may not be exchanged during the week of January 18th.  Therefore, please follow the same procedure on your next regular collection day until your Recology carts have been replaced.  The Cart Replacement Schedule ends on February 15th.
