News Release
While most shop, vineyards seize any chance to feed soil naturally
Christmas is Monday and local vineyards are stilling applying compost.
Crews managed by Mulehead Growers and Cline Cellars operated three different spreaders on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 on vineyards at 1590 Stage Gulch Road in Sonoma County.
Vineyard managers apply compost after the harvest to return nutrients to soil. Hundreds of vineyards in Northern California now apply compost because organic growers have demonstrated the practice elevates soil quality and vine health.
Typically, vineyards finish applying compost by Thanksgiving, but good weather and increased demand for natural products are inspiring growers to keep going.
The compost is made from food scraps collected at San Francisco restaurants and city homes. In this way people in the city are helping return nutrients to farms.
